New to OFC Poker? 4 Tips So You Don't Get Lost
If you're just starting out, don't overthink it. You don't need to play like a pro from minute one. Keep these four ideas in your head and you'll already play solid:
Your number one goal is to NOT foul. Repeat it like a mantra. Before you go for an incredible hand, make sure it's going to be legal. It's the best way to stop giving away points. Remember: winning a row is +1, losing one is −1, and scooping all three is +6 — you only bank any of that if your hand is legal.
Build from the bottom up. Use the back hand for your strongest cards or your highest-potential draws. A simple placement guide keeps you out of trouble: A/K go on top (even as pairs), J/T/9, pairs and suited cards go to the back, and 2 through 8 sit in the middle unless they're suited or paired.
Learn the basic royalties. You don't need the whole list memorized, just the common ones. Knowing what a straight at the back or a pair of kings up top is worth helps you decide much better. And the big one: queens or better up top puts you in Fantasyland — the game's biggest edge.
Spy on your opponents. Watch which cards they place. Need a Jack for a draw and three are already on the table? Time to change the plan.
Four ideas, no more for now. Master these and the rest follows.
Quick recap
- Don't foul → a legal hand first, always (rows +1/−1, scoop +6).
- Build from the back → A/K top, J/T/9-pairs-suited back, 2-8 middle.
- Learn the common royalties → QQ+ up top means Fantasyland.
- Watch your rivals → their cards tell you which draws are dead.
