Fantasyland or play it safe? The big decision in Chinese Poker
Almost every OFC hand comes down, at some point, to the same question: do I risk it for Fantasyland or do I lock up the hand? There's no single answer, but there is a framework for deciding well.
The cost and the benefit
- The benefit: Fantasyland is a huge edge (placing all your cards at once next hand). It's worth a lot.
- The cost: to attempt it, you often have to give up placing safely and risk a foul. And a foul is a disaster.
Deciding well is weighing those two things in every hand.

- How you stand on the scoreboard. If you're behind, you want to take more risk (you need variance). If you're comfortably ahead, lock it up.
- How many opponents there are. With more players, a safe scoop is worth more points; sometimes locking up the scoop beats the Fantasyland lottery.
- Your position. If you act late, you have more information to decide whether the attempt is realistic.
- Your rival's board. This one changes everything, especially heads-up: if your rival hasn't built anything big, a foul costs you few points against them — but if the attempt lands, you win every row plus Fantasyland. Weak rival board = cheap downside, huge upside: the risk is worth much more. Against a rival loaded with royalties, the same foul costs a fortune, so tighten up.
The rule that never fails
Above all else: don't foul chasing a dream. If the Fantasyland attempt forces you to leave the hand on the edge of a foul, it's almost always better to take the safe scoop or the legal hand. A Fantasyland that costs you the hand isn't an edge, it's suicide.
A sample decision
You have K on top and for the other King you have few cards left and only one live King. Placing safely gives you a calm scoop. Do you insist? With a single live King and foul risk, no: take the scoop. If instead there were two live Kings and no foul risk, go ahead, push.
Quick recap
- Weigh benefit (the FL edge) against cost (foul risk).
- Behind → take risk. Ahead → lock it up.
- More opponents → sometimes the safe scoop beats FL.
- Weak rival board (especially heads-up) → cheap foul, huge upside: risk more.
- Never foul chasing Fantasyland.
