How to improve at OFC and a glossary of terms
You already know how to play and think OFC. This guide is your training plan — how to improve without risking a cent — plus a glossary so no term ever trips you up.
How to improve
- Deal hands at home. With a deck, deal yourself 5 cards and keep pulling 3 at a time: place 2, discard 1. Practice placement with no pressure.
- Use the OFC Board Studio. Build specific hands, check royalties and foul, and train your eye to spot Fantasyland.
- Repeat the placement rule until it's automatic: highs up top, coordinated at the back, lows in the middle.
- Count live cards in every hand, even when you're not playing for money. It's the habit that will improve you the most.
- Test yourself with the Academy quizzes. Real opening hands on a real board — and the why behind every answer.

- OFC / Open-Face Chinese Poker: Open Face Chinese Poker. You build three hands at once with the cards face up.
- Pineapple: the modern variant: each turn you get 3 cards, place 2 and discard 1.
- Top / Middle / Back: the three rows (3, 5 and 5 cards).
- Golden rule: back ≥ middle ≥ top. If it doesn't hold, foul.
- Foul: an illegal hand (rows out of order). You lose all three rows and collect no royalties.
- Royalty: bonus points for strong hands (flush, full house, high pair up top, etc.).
- Scoop: winning all three rows against an opponent. Worth +6 (with the +3 bonus).
- Fantasyland: a reward for making QQ+ up top without fouling; next hand you place all your cards at once. To stay in — the Re-Fantasy — you need trips+ up top or quads+ at the back (a full house in the middle does not count). In Progressive (the tournament standard) a Re-Fantasy always deals 14 cards; in Ultimate you repeat your first Fantasy's count.
- Live / dead cards: the ones that can still come / the ones already on the table.
- Outs: the cards you need to complete your draw.
- Discard: the card you drop each turn in Pineapple.
- Trips / Quads: three / four cards of the same rank (in Spanish, trío and póker).
Quick recap
- Practice by dealing yourself hands and with the OFC Board Studio.
